🧡 Bedroom culture 🧡

“There was room for a good deal of the new teenage consumer culture within the ‘culture of the bedroom’—experimenting with make-up, listening to records, reading the mags, sizing up the boyfriends, chatting, jiving: it depended, rather, on some access by girls to room and space within (rather than outside) the home” -Angela McRobbie & Jenny Garber

This immersive installation is a giant elevated bed (approximately 5 x 5 meters) creating a private and intimate bedroom, accessible only to a few people at a time. The bed is equipped with sheets and gigantic sculptural cushions with embroidered poems onto fluorescent orange satin. By laying your head upon the pillows you can hear different sound poetry pieces, which are autobiographical and vulnerable, navigating themes such as sexual assault, mental health, fuckboys, love in the digital era etc. These intense sound pieces create a clash with the pop inviting color of the bed (the satin referencing the codes of the internet and its "bedroom culture"), the neon orange emanating a glow on the walls around the space. As you move around the bed, you become a DJ navigating through the different poetry pieces and playing with the abstract shapes of the pillows that resemble SF like creatures, reminiscent of boyfriend pillows.
